BREED
IMPROVEMENT SCHEME
The BREED IMPROVEMENT SCHEME of BOERBOEL INTERNATIONAL consists of four
different actions that culminate into one comprehensive report on the specific
Boerboel that takes part in this excellent process. The BIS process determines
the TOTAL PRODUCTION INDEX of the specific Boerboel. The importance of this
scheme can not be accentuated enough. Additional measurements are also taken to
gather information to determine specific INHERITANCE FACTORS.
A). APPRAISAL SYSTEM (CONFORMATION and MOVEMENT)
1).GENERAL APPEARANCE (3).
Size, Balance, Musculature, Gender
Authenticity, Impressive, Skin + Coat.
2).HEAD (4).
Type, Comparisons, Volume, Teeth.
3).NECK (1).
Shape, Length, Attachment.
4).FRONT QUARTER (3).
Angulations, Comparisons, Positions,
Volume.
5).CENTER PIECE (1).
Comparisons, Volume.
6).HIND QUARTER (3).
Angulations, Comparisons, Positions,
Volume.
7).MOVEMENT (5).
Buoyant, Smooth, Alignment, Top line,
Reach.
These seven sections are measured to the Breed Standard on a scale of 3 to 5, where 5 represents the PERFECT/ EXCELLENT
example, 4,5 VERY GOOD, 4 GOOD, 3,5 POOR
and 3 NOT ACCEPTABLE.
The value of each section is indicated in brackets.
The total value of the APPRAISAL SYSTEM (Conformation and Movement), counts out
of 100 points , but forms only 50% of the TOTAL PRODUCTION INDEX.(TPI).
B). TEMPERAMENT TEST
In Europe the
official temperament test of each individual country will be the temperament
test used !!!!
The TEMPERAMENT TEST (NOT IN EUROPE) consists of seven individual sections , with a duration of
10 seconds each.
1). SELF CONFIDENT (3).
2). MANAGEABLE (2).
3). SLOW APPROACH (2).
4). FAST APPROACH (3).
5). SLOW APPROACH (CAGED) (3).
6). FAST APPROACH (CAGED with NOISE) (3).
7). SCRATCH WITH STICK (CAGED).
These seven tests are done to establish the Boerboel’s ACCEPTABLE SOCIAL
BEHAVIOR on a scale from 1 to 5.
The first four tests are done while the Boerboel is under control by his handler
but no verbal communication is allowed.
Tests 5 and 6 are done while the Boerboel is in a cage of 1 cubic meter and the
handler is out of sight of the Boerboel.
Test 7 is done while the Boerboel stays in the cage , but is reassured by the
handler while the TEST OFFICIAL scratches the Boerboel with a stick of 500mm
long and 25mm thick.
Detail training is necessary to execute these tests and will be provided in good
time.
Boerboels that are attack trained can not be put through test 7, and alternative
procedures will have to be developed.
The total value of the TEMPERAMENT TEST counts out of 100 points, but forms only
25% of the TOTAL PRODUCTION INDEX (TPI).
C). HEALTH REPORT
The HEALTH REPORT consists of four sections.
1). TESTICLES and SCROTUM(MALES); HYPERPLASIA(BITCHES). (5).
2). HIPS (6).
3). ELBOWS (5).
4). EYELIDS (4).
These four reports are done as follow;
The report on the TESTICLES, SCROTUM and EYELIDS are done during APPRAISAL and
are accessed on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 as the PERFECT/ EXCELLENT example and
progressively less to 1 which is UNACCEPTABLE.
With the report on HYPERPLASIA a scale of 1 to 5 is used with 5 points allocated
when the bitch has a report from a qualified Veterinarian stating that she is
free from HYPERPLASIA. When a small swelling is visible, 4 points; when a heavy
swelling occurs , 3 points ; when a small protrusion can be felt but not seen ,
2 points and when a small protrusion is visible it is UNACCEPTABLE and the
specific bitch can not be considered for registration.
Reports on HIPS and ELBOWS will be handled on the same base as KUSA and
other INTERNATIONAL CANINE ORGANIZATIONS , depending on the specific
country involved.
The point system will be as follows;

The total value of the HEALTH
REPORT counts out of 100 points, but forms only 25% of the TOTAL PRODUCTION
INDEX (TPI).
SEE EXAMPLE BELOW !!!!!!
D). MEASUREMENTS
The following ten measurements are taken to form a data base where specific
Boerboel’s BREEDING VALUES on specific characteristics can be monitored. This
data is of big importance to use in the BREED IMPROVEMENT SCHEME (BIS).
1). HEAD LENGTH
2). HEAD CIRCUMFERENCE
3). NECK CIRCUMFERENCE
4). HEIGHT at the WITHERS
5). CIRCUMFERENCE of the CHEST.
6). DEPTH of the CHEST.
7). WIDTH of the SHOULDER.
8). LENGTH of the BODY.
9). WIDTH of the CROUP.
10). MASS.
E). REGISTERS
It is of utmost importance to widen the gene pool of the Boerboel as various
detrimental conditions are either destroying the breed or looming in the
background. We as guardians of the breed should take charge and through clever
decisions ensure that the breed faces the future with confidence and sound
health conditions. To get maximum value and much needed increased participation
from breeders and owners of Boerboels from around the world, we should make the
accessibility into REGISTRIES a lot easier. We therefore have two REGISTRIES;
1). ACCEPTANCE REGISTER.
- This register is open for
any Boerboel with or without papers of any organization or even without
origin.
- The condition of
acceptance of this specific Boerboel is that he EITHER have a REGISTRATION
CERTIFICATE or BIRTH CERTIFICATE from one of the recognized Boerboel
Registries, in which case this document will be accepted and the APPRAISAL
POINT on this document will be allocated to this specific BOERBOEL, OR this
specific Boerboel will have to achieve an APPRAISAL POINT of 80%.
- With acceptance into this
ACCEPTANCE REGISTER , the specific Boerboel could be used for breeding and
its progeny will also be allowed in this register through LITTER
ANNOUNCEMENTS and could also be used for breeding in this register.
2).
EXCELLENCE REGISTER
- BOERBOEL INTERNATIONAL has
a BREED IMPROVEMENT SCHEME in place that will provide the necessary
processes to ensure that serious breeders will be able to put their breeding
stock through the various stages of this BIS to establish the TOTAL
PRODUCTION INDEX (TPI) of each of their BREEDING Boerboels.
- The Boerboels that conform
to this standard will be allowed to be shown on
International Shows and they and their progeny will comply to KUSA and FCI
rules to be exported all over the world.
- ONLY Boerboels with a
three generation pedigree could be taken up into the EXCELLENCE REGISTER.
ACKNOWLEDGMENT for
quality achieved in this Register works as follow;
- APPRAISAL POINT 75% to 85%
= GOOD
- APPRAISAL POINT 85+% to
90% = VERY GOOD
- APPRAISAL POINT 90+% =
EXCELLENT
- TEMPERAMENT POINT 75% to
85% = GOOD
- TEMPERAMENT POINT 85+% to
90% = VERY GOOD
- TEMPERAMENT POINT 90+% =
EXCELLENT
- HEALTH REPORT 75% to 85% =
GOOD
- HEALTH REPORT 85+% to 90%
= VERY GOOD
- HEALTH REPORT 90+% =
EXCELLENT
These results , both the % and
the achievement results , together with the TPI value, will be printed on the
specific Boerboel’s REGISTRATION CERTIFICATE.
In addition a star * will be awarded for each EXCELLENT point achieved.
An additional star * will be awarded if the particular Boerboel participated in
the MEASUREMENT process.
The MINIMUM REQUIREMENT for a Boerboel to be taken up into the EXCELLENCE
REGISTER is a minimum of three (3) GOOD results on its REGISTRATION REGISTER.
The MAXIMUM ACKNOWLEDGMENT a Boerboel will be able to get , will be four
stars ???? .
To make things a lot more easy to understand , the star system could be
simplified to the following;
| 1 x Star
|
* |
= BRONZE |
|
| 2 x Star |
** |
= SILVER |
|
| 3 x Star |
*** |
= GOLD |
|
| 4 x Star |
**** |
= PLATINUM |

EXAMPLE:
A male dog with a conformation
score of 85%, who has "B" hips, is elbow dysplasia free , has both testicles
fully descended into the scrotum and is entropion and ectropion free will attain
his health score thus
Two testicles : 5 x coefficient 5 = 25
"B" hips : 4 x coefficient 6 = 24
Elbow dysplasia free : 5 x coefficient 5 = 25
Entropion and Ectropion free : 5 x coefficient 4 = 20
Giving a total health score of 94, this score of 94 is then divide by 4 = 23,50%
His conformation score of 85% is divide by 2 giving him 42.50%
So far his appraisal score without his temperament test is 23.25% + 42.50% =
65.75%
Should he score 85 in his temperament test this is then divided by 4 to become
21.25 %
therefore his total score would be:
|
Conformation
: |
42,50 % |
|
|
Health : |
23,50 % |
|
|
Temperament : |
21,25 % |
